The Wounded Warrior Project is a nonprofit organization founded in 2002 whose mission is to "honor and empower wounded warriors" who have been severely injured during the war on terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other hot spots around the world.
Started by John Melia (who was severely injured in a helicopter crash while serving in Somalia), the WWP begins at the bedside of the severely wounded providing services and programs designed to ease the burdens of those heroes and their families and aid in the recovery process an smooth the transition back to civilian life.
They offer occupational direction and training, seminars to help deal with the effects of combat stress while transitioning back to civilian life, and outdoor sports programs to help develop a positive self-image and outlook.
The WWP is also actively involved in creating legislation to help aid wounded servicemen and women.
